Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Solid Gold: What's the Difference?

Gold plated, gold filled, or solid gold — which should you choose? We break down the differences in quality, price, and durability so you can shop with confidence.
Shopping for gold jewellery can feel confusing with so many terms thrown around. Gold plated, gold filled, vermeil, solid gold — what does it all mean, and which is right for you?
Here's a clear, honest breakdown.
Solid Gold
Solid gold is exactly what it sounds like — jewellery made entirely from gold. It's available in different karats (9K, 14K, 18K, 24K), with higher karats meaning more gold content.
Pros: Lasts forever, never tarnishes, holds its value
Cons: Very expensive — a simple solid gold necklace can cost hundreds to thousands of pounds
Best for: Investment pieces, heirlooms, engagement rings
Gold Filled
Gold filled jewellery has a thick layer of gold (at least 5% of the item's total weight) bonded to a base metal using heat and pressure. It's more durable than gold plated but still not solid gold.
Pros: More durable than gold plated, lasts 10–30 years with care
Cons: More expensive than gold plated, less widely available
Best for: Everyday pieces you want to last many years
Gold Plated
Gold plated jewellery has a thin layer of gold applied over a base metal (commonly stainless steel, brass, or silver). The quality depends heavily on the base metal used and the thickness of the gold layer.
Pros: Beautiful, affordable, on-trend, wide variety of styles
Cons: Requires more care than solid gold or gold filled
Best for: Fashion jewellery, trying new styles, building a jewellery wardrobe without spending a fortune
What About Vermeil?
Vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") is gold plated sterling silver. It's a step up from standard gold plating because sterling silver is a more valuable base metal. However, it can still tarnish and requires similar care.
Which Should You Choose?
It depends on your budget and how you plan to wear it:
- For investment or a forever piece: Solid gold
- For long-lasting everyday jewellery: Gold filled
- For on-trend, affordable jewellery with great quality: Gold plated on stainless steel
